Earlier this summer, I created a mini book for the Awesome Ladies Project that’s a little outside the scope of what I would typically define as memory keeping. It’s photo-less, doesn’t include any direct details about myself, and isn’t tied to any one period of time or event. However, the type of music we listen to, the bands we love, and the lyrics that speak to us are all still a part of who we are as individuals, so I created this little lyric journal as a place to keep track of this little piece of my story, using a notebook from the American Crafts DIY Shop Daybooks set and some colored pencils. There was no specific rhyme or reason to the lyrics I chose to include. Some speak to me on a personal level, some provide good life advice, and for others, I simply like the poetic way they were written or the visuals they inspire in my imagination.
The first thing I noticed when I began working on this project was that while I used to listen to a huge variety of music, lately I’ve been cycling through the same 5-10 artists over and over again. Right away, I decided to be okay with it if my mini book ended up having multiple pages of lyrics from the same musician (which it did), since that would be an accurate reflection of my current story. However, I did attempt to stretch my memory a bit to think back on some of the songs that were once in heavy rotation in the playlists of my past.
On the cover of the book, I included lyrics from my favorite musician that were relevant to music in general and how important it is in his (and my) life. Then, after creating a quick intro title page, I got to work on the inside pages, simply writing some lyrics in my normal handwriting, while doodling others when a particularly strong image came to mind or practicing more creative lettering.
Here are a few of my favorite pages from the book, which I will continue to add to as inspiration strikes.
